OpenAI, NVIDIA and SB Energy Announce Major Ohio AI Data Center Partnership
A major artificial-intelligence infrastructure project took shape in Ohio on Monday as OpenAI, NVIDIA and SB Energy announced plans surrounding the PORTS-Pike Technology Campus in Pike County. The project is designed to provide OpenAI with approximately 8 gigawatts of computing capacity while bringing together data-center development, energy infrastructure and advanced computing on a large scale.
The announcement illustrates a broader shift in the AI industry: computing capacity increasingly depends not only on software and semiconductor technology, but also on access to land, electricity, construction capacity and long-term infrastructure financing.
Infrastructure becomes a strategic business issue
OpenAI said it had entered an agreement to secure approximately 8 gigawatts of IT capacity at PORTS-Pike. SB Energy will develop, own and operate the data center under a long-term lease arrangement with OpenAI, while NVIDIA will serve as the exclusive AI-compute infrastructure provider for the campus.
NVIDIA separately announced that it would invest $1.5 billion in SB Energy and provide credit support connected with the initial 4.25 gigawatts of IT capacity, with an option involving additional capacity.
The arrangement reflects the increasing importance of securing the physical resources needed to support AI workloads. NVIDIA Chief Executive Jensen Huang described land, power and the physical shell of a data center as critical resources for what the company calls AI factories.
For business leaders, the development highlights an important change in technology strategy. AI expansion can no longer be viewed solely as a question of software development or employee adoption. The underlying infrastructure can determine how quickly companies are able to deploy and scale advanced computing.
Ohio becomes an AI infrastructure hub
The PORTS-Pike project is located in Pike County on a site associated with the U.S. Department of Energy. OpenAI said the development is expected to create approximately 35,000 construction jobs during a six-year buildout and 2,500 long-term operating positions.
OpenAI also said it would provide $40 million for a community grant fund, matching a previously announced $40 million commitment from SB Energy. The company said the project would pay its project-specific energy and infrastructure costs and invest in local economic opportunities.
The scale of the project means its economic significance extends beyond the technology sector. Large data centers require construction contractors, engineers, energy providers, equipment suppliers, network infrastructure and specialized operations personnel.
That creates potential opportunities for businesses far removed from AI software itself.
The economics of computing capacity
The announcement also highlights the financial complexity of building AI infrastructure. NVIDIA's credit support is intended to help secure the land, power and shell capacity required for the initial phase of development.
That structure reflects the capital intensity of modern data centers. Developers must commit substantial resources before computing workloads generate revenue, while technology companies need confidence that sufficient capacity will exist when demand arrives.
The partnership therefore represents more than a traditional technology contract. It connects a major AI customer, a semiconductor company and an infrastructure developer through a long-term arrangement designed around future computing demand.
A model for future projects
OpenAI said the companies would collaborate on design, testing and commissioning and publish technical lessons from the project concerning infrastructure resilience, component qualification and software-level workload management.
That focus could have implications for future AI facilities. As computing clusters grow larger, reliability becomes increasingly important because interruptions can affect substantial amounts of processing capacity.
The project also demonstrates how AI development is becoming increasingly dependent on partnerships. No single company necessarily controls all the resources required to build a large-scale AI facility. Access to computing hardware, electricity, construction expertise, financing and customer demand must be coordinated.
Why the announcement matters
The Ohio development is significant because it places physical infrastructure at the center of AI business strategy. The project links advanced computing with energy, construction, employment and long-term capital commitments.
For executives and entrepreneurs, the development provides a clear example of how the AI economy is expanding beyond applications and software. The next stage of competition increasingly involves securing the infrastructure required to operate those technologies at scale.
The PORTS-Pike agreement therefore represents not simply another data-center announcement, but a broader business shift in which computing capacity, energy availability and infrastructure development become strategic corporate resources.
