San Francisco AI company Snorkel AI raised $350 million as demand grows for specialized data used to develop advanced AI systems.

AI Data Startup Reaches $3.5 Billion Valuation

San Francisco-based Snorkel AI has raised $350 million in new funding at a valuation of approximately $3.5 billion, underscoring the growing commercial importance of specialized data for the development and evaluation of advanced artificial intelligence systems.

The financing was led by Insight Partners and S32, with participation from existing investors including Addition, Greylock and Wells Fargo. The transaction values the company at nearly three times the $1.3 billion valuation it reached during its previous major funding round.

Snorkel was founded in 2019 by researchers who came out of Stanford's AI laboratory. The company initially focused on software but has increasingly shifted toward providing finished datasets and reinforcement-learning environments directly to customers.

The change reflects a broader development in the AI industry as companies move beyond basic model training and seek more specialized data for increasingly complex systems.

Data Becomes a Strategic AI Resource

AI models depend on large quantities of data, but the requirements change as systems become more capable.

Earlier generations of AI applications often relied heavily on relatively straightforward labeled datasets. More advanced models require data that can support reasoning, specialized tasks, evaluation and interaction with complex environments.

Snorkel's business has developed around that demand.

The company provides what it describes as an agentic data-development platform, combining human specialists with AI systems and automated processes to create and evaluate datasets. Its network includes specialists in areas such as coding, law and medicine.

The model allows the company to produce specialized data products for AI laboratories, enterprises, hyperscalers and government customers.

Revenue Growth Reflects Market Demand

Snorkel said its annualized revenue run rate has surpassed $350 million, compared with approximately $20 million a year earlier. The company attributed the growth largely to its data-as-a-service business, which it launched in the previous year.

That expansion illustrates how the AI economy is developing beyond companies that build foundation models.

Businesses supplying infrastructure, computing capacity, evaluation systems and training data have become increasingly important parts of the technology ecosystem.

For entrepreneurs and corporate leaders, the trend demonstrates that AI-related opportunities are emerging across the value chain.

Human Expertise Remains Part of the Model

Although automation is central to Snorkel's platform, the company continues to rely on human specialists.

Experts help design scenarios, establish tasks and develop grading standards, while AI tools automate portions of the quality-control process. The company works with specialists across several professional fields to generate and evaluate complex datasets.

That approach reflects a broader challenge facing AI developers: increasingly capable systems require increasingly sophisticated methods for evaluating their performance.

Human expertise remains particularly relevant when datasets involve specialized domains where accuracy depends on professional knowledge.

Funding Will Support Expansion

Snorkel plans to use the new funding to hire researchers and engineers while expanding its enterprise and government operations.

The company also plans to support third-party AI model evaluations and enter additional industries and data categories.

The strategy places the company in a market where demand is being driven by AI laboratories, cloud providers and businesses seeking more advanced systems.

The financing also comes during a period when venture capital continues flowing into companies supplying data and infrastructure to frontier AI developers.

A Shift in the AI Business Model

The development illustrates a larger shift in the economics of artificial intelligence.

As AI models become more advanced, the value of the supporting data increasingly depends on quality, specialization and the ability to evaluate whether the information is useful.

That creates opportunities for companies that can combine domain expertise with automation.

Snorkel's growth demonstrates how a startup founded around academic AI research can evolve into a commercial data provider serving large enterprises and government organizations.

The Next Stage of AI Infrastructure

The new funding does not guarantee a particular outcome for the company or the wider AI market. It does, however, provide evidence of continued investor interest in businesses that support the development of advanced AI systems.

For business leaders, the significance extends beyond Snorkel itself.

The expanding market for specialized training data suggests that AI adoption is creating demand for new categories of technology suppliers. As companies build more capable systems, data quality, evaluation and domain expertise are becoming increasingly important parts of the innovation process.

Snorkel's latest financing therefore places the company within a growing segment of the AI economy focused not on building the models themselves, but on supplying the data and environments needed to make those models more capable and useful.
